John begins this chapter by addressing his audience as “My Little Children.” He welcomes us as part of his family which confirms that once we have accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, we are children and joint-heirs to Kingdom of God.God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. Ephesians 1:5.

John moves from inviting the reader to experience the joy that He has experienced from the very beginning in 1 John 1, to developing a stronger more intimate relationship with God in 1 John 2:3.
In 1 John 2:3, the passage states: “And by this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.” He does not state that in order to fully know Him, we must follow a list of rules, but loving Him and further developing a stronger relationship with Him, will transform our values, our virtues and more important…

John explains that we must continue to strive and live holy and righteous lives. But our inner man must also reflect these truths. Because God is a triune being, we cannot have a relationship with Him and not experience a relationship with Jesus Christ or the power of the Holy Spirit. We must receive all of God which includes a change in our inner man. The outward expression of this inner peace and change is joy. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, [a] 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Galatians 5:22-24
